Meet our teachers, families, and students - future leaders, technology gurus, educators, engineers, medical professionals, service providers and so much more. Below is a little of the magic we experience. The kind of magic that happens when caring people come together to improve the lives of children, youth and families.
In January, In Reach launched its STEM Unplugged Program for middle school students at Kenmoor Middle School in Landover, MD. These are the young leaders who will be planning and hosting cafes, lead by a variety of STEM professionals, for their peers through the end of the 2018-2019 school year.
Despite the blistering cold temperature, we had a ball at our January 2019 Mind in the Making Family Book Club meeting where we discussed perspective taking - discerning how someone else thinks and feels. With several families in attendance, parents engaged in discussions and activities about this important life skill. The children's books selected for promoting perspective taking were Whoever You Are by Mem Fox for students in PK - 1st grade and Freedom Summer by Deborah Wiles for students in grades 2-5.
Art in Action
Art is important and offered as enrichment in our K-8 Academy. Since 2015, we have utilized the amazing programs by Art in Action. It has been amazing watching students who demonstrated no interest in art become completely invested in the art lessons after just one session. Below is the 2017-2018 projects completed by the scholars in our College and Career Ready 21st Century Community Learning Center at Kenmoor Middle School.
Media-Smart Youth Presentations
Each year, our awesome scholars at Kenmoor Middle School complete a Media-Smart Youth project. Media-Smart Youth is an engaging curriculum that focuses on building skills in media analysis and media production to help young people ages 11 to 13 understand the complex media world around them and how it can influence their health—especially in regard to nutrition and physical activity. Divided into two teams, below are 2018 Team Physical Activity and Team Nutrition presentations.
Elementary Scholars Getting Physical
Engaging our scholars in yoga has been one of the best things we have done. The students enjoy it (they actually tell their parents about it). Teachers report better behavior and we are over the moon. These are our energetic scholars at William Paca ES.
